I worked the floor for thirty-two years. Comps, whales, eye-in-the-sky, the whole operation. You develop a sense for what's wrong. A guy playing 500 units per hand on blackjack but betting 5 units on the roulette wheel next to it. That's wrong. Somebody orders a drink, walks away, comes back two minutes later. That's wrong. Wrong is usually profit leaking somewhere.

Bonus abuse is the same principle applied to software. It smells off. The detection system flags it. Humans sometimes override the flag. Usually they don't.

What The System Looks For

A casino sets rules for a bonus. You get a 100-euro bonus on your first 500-euro deposit. You need to wager that 600 euros (bonus plus deposit) at least 30 times before you can cash out. That's 18,000 euros in total wagering.

Most players play normally. They lose 30 to 40 percent to the house edge across that 18,000 euros in wagering. They end up with less than they started.

But some players are smarter about it. They deposit into the casino and take the bonus. Then they immediately bet it all on an even-money proposition (red or black on roulette, or pass/don't pass on craps). They've got a 50-50 shot. If they lose, they lose the bonus and leave. If they win, they double their money before wagering requirements are applied.

That's bonus abuse. They're using the bonus to gamble with a 50-50 edge (minus the house edge) instead of actually playing casino games as intended.

The detection system flags this. Accounts that deposit, bonus, and immediately place large even-money bets are flagged. The system tracks: bet size relative to deposit, type of games played, frequency of bets, time between deposit and betting.

A player who deposits 100 euros, takes a 100-euro bonus, and immediately bets 150 euros on red in roulette looks like a computer model of bonus abuse. The system catches it.

The Rules and The Abuse

Casinos try to prevent abuse through bonus rules. The most obvious: exclude certain games from bonus wagering. If roulette doesn't count toward wagering requirements, a player can't abuse red/black betting.

But players get creative. They play low-variance games instead. Or they play games where they can control the bet size precisely. Some casinos allow live dealer games in bonus wagering. A smart player might play live blackjack, betting the minimum every hand while the dealer spins out the required number of hands.

Minimum bets for a long period at low-variance games also flag the system. It looks like you're just grinding out wagering requirements without actually playing. The detection system flags accounts that meet these criteria: small deposits, high bonus amounts (proportionally), and then minimum bets on low-variance games for extended periods.

The Response

When an account is flagged, a few things can happen. The most common: the bonus is voided. You've met the wagering requirements technically, but the casino decides the bonus was abused and removes it from your account. You keep your original deposit. You lose the bonus.

Second option: account closure. The casino decides the behaviour is problematic enough that they don't want the customer. They return your deposit (less any losses from normal play) and close your account.

Third option: restricted withdrawal. You've met the wagering requirements, but the system flags that you might be withdrawing funds from bonus abuse. The casino requires additional verification (proof of address, phone call, etc.) before allowing withdrawal.

False Positives and Legitimate Play

The system isn't perfect. Sometimes legitimate players get flagged.

A player deposits 100 euros, gets a 100-euro bonus, and wants to get it over with. They play fast, betting roughly the same amount each hand on blackjack. They meet the requirements in an hour. The system flags them because the pattern matches bonus abuse: quick wagering, consistent bet sizes, low variance game.

But the player wasn't abusing. They were just grinding through the requirement efficiently.

Most casinos have a dispute process. If your account is wrongly flagged, you can request review. A human looks at the account history. If the play looks reasonable (reasonable variance in bet sizes, play across multiple games, longer time period), the flag might be lifted.

Sometimes the human decides against you anyway. Casinos have broad authority to deny bonuses and close accounts. If they decide your behaviour was suspicious, they can refuse the bonus. Legal recourse is difficult because you consented to the terms.

The Arms Race

Players find new abuse methods. Casinos update detection. It's constant.

One abuse method: multiple accounts. You open ten accounts, use referral bonuses to fund each one, and play across all ten simultaneously. The detection system now flags accounts that refer to similar email domains or payment methods.

Another: deposit and bonus split across multiple casinos. You avoid triggering any single casino's detection because no individual casino sees the full picture. Detection would require cross-casino data sharing, which doesn't happen.

The system is sophisticated but not omniscient. It catches the obvious cases. The clever ones slip through more often. Most casual bonus abusers get caught. Professional bonus-hunting operations don't.

I've seen the back-office reporting. Accounts flagged for bonus abuse, accounts closed, bonuses voided. The volume is small relative to total players. Maybe 2-3 percent of accounts get flagged in a given month. But every single one affects someone's money.

The system works. Not perfectly, but well enough that most casinos are satisfied with it. And that's what matters in this business: the house is satisfied.
